Zombie Betrayal

The face of teenage anguish

The face of teenage anguish

When I was 12, I played a lot of Call of Duty: World at War - Zombies (formerly known as Nazi Zombies). Oftentimes I would join lobbies of four as a single. Make no mistake, I was really bad at this game. Bad enough to piss off the random players I was matched with. There was one particular time that I will never forget: We were well beyond round 25 and each of us were either approaching or breaking our individual records on the Der Riese map. I had to leave for some unknown reason, but I was the match host - meaning my departure ended the game for everyone. After pressing “Quit Game” and heard a brief moment of silence as the waiting lobby loaded, then I heard the screaming, swearing, wild anger of three hardcore gamer boys, confused as to why their great game was abrubtly ended. Panicking, I turned off my Xbox and heard silence again. I will never forget the crushing silence between the game and the waiting lobby. My young heart knew I had committed a grave error. I carry the embarassment of screwing up the gaming experience of three strangers with me to this day.
